Half Moon Bay - Home of Oban, the largest town on Stewart Island
Half Moon Bay is the northmost populated area on Stewart Island, it is where daily ferries dock, and the planes land from the mainland, bring in Vistors and supplys.
The town of Oban, which is Stewart Island only Settlement, is suitated in Half Moon Bay and where most visitors to the island arrive.
With a permanant population of less than 400, this tiny settlement swells considerably over summer, as more than half the houses and other dwellings are holiday or vacation homes. During the tourist season, the number of visitors vastly outnumber the locals, the locals aren't treatened by this, and welcome everyone.
During the off season the village supports a small fishing fleet, the ferry service from the mainland, and a variety of tourist industries, which use the quite times to build their stocks up for the next season.
Visitors are welcome any time of the year, and in fact staying there in the off season, if a wonderful way to really feel like you fit in. Be warned though, many of the permanant resedents of the island, just came for an overnight trip 10-20 years ago, and just loved the Stewart Island and it's people so much, have never left.
