Balclutha lies towards the end of the mighty Clutha River. The Clutha river is the largest in New Zealand by volumm of water, and this country's second longest river after the Waikato River in the North Island.
The River provides visitors with various recreational activuties including, water skiing and power boating and of course trout fishing.
The most prominent structure in the town is the concrete road bridge across the river, which was built in 1938.
North Balclutha perches on the hill to the north of the bridge and Rosebank on the hill to the South, the rest of the town lies on the flatland that lies in the loop of the river.
