Kaikoura is best known for the snowcapped Southern Alps backdrop, running down to the rugged coastlines, and the seal colony's that can been seen along the coast at most time of the year.

There is also a colony just out of the Kaikoura where you can with care walk around the sunning seals, and take photos from only feet away, be aware though these are wild seals, and they don't take kindly to being disturbed, we however got some stunning photos of the seals and other wildlife at this protected colony.
