Tongariro National Park is a World Heritage Park recognising the significance of the history of Maori Culture and the spiritual association of the area. As well as magnificent volcanic features.
Also while you are here take a look at Mount Ngauruhoe which was where the filming for Mount Doom on The Lord Of The Rings was filmed. In summer is has many recreational uses including tramping,fishing biking and kayaking.
It is also popular in Winter with skifields at Whakapapa and Mount Ruapehu covering all levels of peoples skills on the skifields from learner to advanced.

Located midway between Auckland and Wellington, near to the World Heritage National Park, on 20 acres, this accommodation is worth the train trip or drive to get there.
It is just 15 minutes from the Mt. Ruapehu skifields, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, and within short driving range of Taupo and the Waitomo Caves.
Wood Pigeon Lodge is very secluded and offers the rustic charm of a converted barn on four levels. Sleeps up to 11, but 8 are more comfortable over four bedrooms.
There are fantastic mountain and bush views from the large property, making it a perfect base summer or winter.
